FAQ

Common questions

Which calculator do I use to work out how many ounces I am actually trading?

Use the position size calculator. Gold is quoted as XAU/USD with one standard lot equal to 100 oz, so the tool converts your lot figure into ounces and into notional value at the reference price. That tells you what a 0.10-lot or 0.50-lot position really represents before you look at margin.

How do I convert a gold move into rand using your pip value calculator?

The pip value calculator takes your lot size and the pip definition for gold, which is 0.01, and returns the value of one pip. Because XAU/USD settles in dollars, you then convert that dollar figure to rand at the rate you enter, which is what makes the result useful for a South African account.

What is the difference between your margin calculator and your profit calculator?

The margin calculator answers what your broker sets aside to hold the position open, which depends on leverage and lot size. The profit calculator answers what you gain or lose when price moves from entry to exit. They use different inputs, so run both: margin tells you whether you can open the trade, profit tells you whether it was worth it.

Do the calculators apply the 1:200 retail leverage cap automatically?

You enter the leverage yourself, so the result reflects what you type. In South Africa retail leverage is capped at up to 1:200, with up to 1:500 for eligible or professional clients depending on the instrument. Treat that as a ceiling, not a target. At 1:200 a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin.

Can the pivot point tool help me plan gold entries around session opens?

The pivot points calculator derives support and resistance levels from a prior period's high, low and close, which many gold traders use to frame the London and New York opens. It gives you reference levels, not signals. Pair it with the position size and margin tools so a level-based entry is still sized to your account.
